Last Friday former PP treasurer Luis Bárcenas fired another salvo against Spanish PM Mariano Rajoy. Mr Bárcenas spoke outside Madrid’s National Court the day after he was released from the Soto del Real prison after posting the €200,000 bail set by the judge. “Rajoy had always known about the slush fund”, he claimed, but he couldn’t say whether Aznar was aware of it or not.

According to the former PP treasurer, his handwritten notes on Rajoy’s party’s kickbacks are “all true” and if anyone profited from them, it was “the party”. Mr Bárcenas ironically remarked that he is “considering” rejoining the PP. He insisted that the accounts of the slush fund are “accurate to the letter, from start to finish”.

“All the payments noted are completely true and were made to the individuals whose names are shown. They received a sum in cash delivered in an envelope by treasurer Álvaro Lapuerta”, he stated.

“I am accountable for my own actions”

“I am accountable for my own actions, but the main beneficiary of the slush fund was the party”, he claimed. Mr Bárcenas made these statements as he left Madrid’s National Court where he is to report three times a week, as per the judge’s instructions.
